Ascent Trip Report

This was a winter adenture I had wanted to do for a long time, basically since I moved to Wyoming. Last winter the lake ice conditions were too poor to venture out more than 50 feet from shore with any confidence. Today, however, you probably could've driven a semi out onto the lake. Not that you'd want to. The solid lake ice conditions combined with flawless blue skies made it an easy decision to go for it. The walk out to the island is, of course, breathtaking. Waterfalls, Snowshoe and Moran Canyons dominate the scene. To the east, the Breccia Cliffs of Togwotee stand proudly visible. And best of all, Mount Moran had never loomed larger. I followed fresh snowmobile tracks nearly the entire way to the island, which made me even more confident in the ice quality. No one, it would seem, had fallen in yet on machines much heavier than I. When I got to the island itself, I was very excited, as I had wanted to get out here for years, summer or winter. I'd say this was the way to go though- it's a unique adventure in that it's not even possible in the summer (you can boat over, of course, but that's not as fun as walking across the lake from the mainland). The island itself is beautiful. Heavily wooded and quite hilly. I found the highest point quite easily, and to my surprise I found a spectacular clearing not far to the south which had 180 degree views. I spent about 30 minutes here, then decided to start the walk back to Colter Bay. The lake ice conditions had not deteriorated by the time I got back to the shore, though it had been over four hours since I had left. I had a huge grin on my face the whole drive home- it was just one of those perfect adventures we all long for.
