Ascent Trip Report

This is a 5-mile round trip that is part of the 25 miles of century-old carriage trails in the Moses Cone Park. Beginning at Shulls Mill Road just west of the Blue Ridge Parkway near MP 295, the trail climbs a half mile to a pasture where you are likely to meet cows. It then flattens out and winds another 2 miles to the summit, circling the mountain three times clockwise on a very gradual incline. (Mr. Cone evidently had fun routing this trail!) The summit is partly shaded but has views in a couple of directions and has a stone platform that would make a great picnic spot. The carriage trail is open to horses but closed to bikes and other vehicles. Like all the trails at Cone Park, it is wide, well-graded, graveled, and is suitable for strollers. This is a nice alternative to the far busier Flat Top Trail from the Cone Manor. The summit is not as high as Flat Top (4558), but you don't have to scale the firetower to take in the views.
