Ascent Trip ReportThis peak is officially off limits and should not be combed, as we learned on our visit.
Near the summit of Pirimade, after a short bushwhack up from the Chirripo-Pirimade col, we heard yelling in the distance. We didn't see anyone, so assumed it was from a party on the main trail below. We summitted, clambered back down to the main trail via a cliffy/brushy class-3 ridge, and easily took the main trail back to the cabaña and benches at the main four-way trail junction below. After a long rest there we headed towards Pico Terbi on the well-signed trail.
However, we were accosted by a park ranger as we set off. He wanted to see our park tickets, and was incensed--he had been the one yelling at us. One is not supposed to go off-trail, and he thought we were ignoring him as we broke the law. He said he could order us to leave the park immediately.
In my broken Spanish, I was able to apologize, appear flustered, and promise to not go off trail again. I told him that there were cairns on our route, so it was an informal trail of sorts, and that that park had so many rules that I did not recall reading about the off-trail regulation. There were no "Stay on the trail" signs, either, among the many in the park.
The ranger calmed down and set us on our way with no penalties.
However, we recommend that future visitors avoid this peak and stay on the trail. This is a highly regulated park and they take their rules very seriously. |
