Ascent Trip Report This was a private hike with George Christiansen. First on the agenda was the Desert Peak East Ord. We had a little problem finding the road to drive to the trail head. We drove out in Owens Valley on Camp Rock Rd. The dirt road is abut 7.1 miles after the end of the paved section, just under some power lines. There is a sign on the right side. The first 2 miles was rough, but ok for 2WD high clearance. When we came to a junction, we went to the right. After 2 miles, it becomes a 4WD vehicle required. We were not able to make it to the trail head the DPS guide talks about. We came up short about 100 yards. In doing this hike we made 2 mistakes. From where we started, we went up a gully to reach the gully we would take to the summit. It would have been easier if we walked the road 100 yards and start there. From that point, you drop down then over to the gully that leads to the summit. The second mistake was once we started up the gully, we should have gone to the left (west). It would have been easier with a lot of less boulder hopping in the gully. The gully heads up to a saddle where you turn to the right (east) and continue to the summit.
Next was Rodman Mtn. Wilderness HP. We continued on Camp Rock Rd. to a junction, going a short distance to RM-WHP. The junction to the right takes you to RM-HP. RM-WHP was a short hike to the summit.
Next was RM-HP. You can drive up to the antennas and park. It’s a short distance to the RM-HP summit. There was a single antenna on the summit. From RM-HP, we continued along the ridge to the 3rd bump for Nelly Bly BM. There was a register and BM on Nelly Bly.
Next was Fry Mtn. High Point. From the junction for RM-HP, we drove about 2 ½ miles to a road that runs due south to Fry. This road is fine about ½ miles. It then turns in to a definite high clearance 4WD vehicle for about the last ½ mile. We parked a a saddle west of Fry and then hiked the short distance to the summit.
