Ascent Trip Report

After questioning whether the memorial pillar was the true summit or not, I have determined the topo map (which shows the true summit in an entire contour above the pillar) is indeed correct and that the memorial pillar is NOT the summit.

(See my two previous TR's for hiking directions)

Once at the pillar, I ran thru the overgrown field about 200 yards to the wire fence denoting the the historic site boundary. I called back to my friends, who looked a bit lower than me (however it was hard to tell and I was expecting them to be lower which may have skewed my observations), and they told me I definitely looked taller ("without a doubt" was their official quote) from the memorial pillar. From the edge of the fence, it was pretty obvious that a small mound about 20 yards slightly left past the fence in a (wheat?) field was 1-2 feet taller, so I hopped the fence to get the true summit. (Why does peakbagging always seem to involve trespassing lol?) My friends again were convinced I was even taller than before, and from that angle it certainly appeared they were lower - more so than at the fence line.

Therefore, I have made a personal conclusion that the true summit is in the field behind the fence line. Obviously there was no professional equipment or even a GPS used, but eyesight and a topo map are usually decent tools. In the true spirit of peakbagging, regardless of which is the true summit, one should really visit both summits to make sure the true summit is obtained.
