Ascent Trip ReportI wasted a lot of time searching for the access road to Mount Oglethorpe. I did not drive far enough to the east to find Monument Road, which is the only way to reach this high point. Monument Road ends at the summit of Mount Oglethorpe and has been turned into a nice park called Eagle's Rest Park. The summit still supports a fenced communication tower, but viewing platforms have been built on several sides of the summit and it appears to be haven for bird watching. This was not the case when I was there. It was just after sunset and it started to snow heavily. I was worried I might have trouble driving down snow covered Monument Road, but I made it safely back down to lower elevations where the snow changed to rain. I was unable to locate the summit benchmark, but I did not look very hard. It was dark, cold and I was getting covered with snow.
