Ascent Trip ReportParked at Metate trailhead (Granite Basin Rec. Area) and took Granite mountain trail to where it turns away from the summit towards a viewpoint end. There is a faint trail here but it's hard to stay on though cairns and some flagging help. We got off route following flagging up to the west ridge and over to its north side but were able to cross back over to the south where we should have stayed. Near the top we again got off route by following cairns up towards the summit when we should have traversed to the east. Our route worked and was some fun class 2 and 3 scrambling to the ridge about a hundred yards west of the top but it saved a lot of time going down the east side and looping around, followed cairns and faint paths though it was hard to stay on the route without the gps. Interesting area with all the granite boulders and cliffs and fun scrambling and routefinding. We (Annette and I ) took 6.25 hours round trip but would have been shorter with better routefinding.
