Ascent of Florence Peak on 2016-12-30
|Date:||Friday, December 30, 2016|
|Ascent Type:||Successful Summit Attained|
| Elevation:||5508 ft / 1678 m|
Ascent Trip ReportIn winter this climb is protected from avalanches all the way until the false summit is reached. Right below the falls summit there could be some minor risk (slab avy or possibly cornices breaking off) if conditions are right. Reaching the falls summit we encountered some icy areas. In winter most people stop at the false summit which provides outstanding views. Continuing to the true summit involves a sketchy ridge line traverse and climbing on icy rock. Again, subject to change depending on conditions. There are no views until the falls summit is reached. This is a strenuous trip in winter.
Gear used: snow shoes, poles, micro spikes (definitely a must have).
Total RT: 8 miles (my gps showed 10 miles, but consensus seems to be 8 miles)
Total Elevation Change: 4,300 feet
