Ascent Trip ReportI had read a few TR's about this peak, and it sounded super easy so I decided to give it a try. Parking is very hard to come by in this area, but as luck would have it the gate for the private road leading towards the summit was open and I drove in and parked off to the side. I figured I'd be back in 15 minutes, willing to risk getting caught by a ranger for such a short window.
So I started walking up the road, and an older gentleman was visible coming down towards me. He didn't look like a hiker, as I had hoped. He asked if he could help me. I acted surprised, and asked if it was okay to be walking up the road. He said that the road was private property (but he was very nice about this and the entire encounter was very friendly, we even discussed how long he'd lived here, the pros and cons, etc). He said I was going to get 2 tickets if I wasn't careful (parking, and trespassing I assume) and he didn't want that to happen. I told him I wanted to see the view from "that peak over there", pointing in the general direction of PK 2541. He said he understood, and directed me to a parking area about a half mile up Skyline, telling me that I could follow a trail from there to the next peak over and get the same views. I didn't have it in me to try to explain the whole P300 significance so I thanked him for his help and drove off, figuring I could bag this one quite easily another day. |
