Ascent Trip Report

wow. awesome peak. the views, the climb. just totally worth it.

last week, when i was in this area with david and andrew for signal peak, we had spied castle dome... up to that point it was just another entry on the P2k list for me. i hadn't looked for pictures yet... but when you see it you do wonder whether it's class 5 or what. it looks to be sheer cliffs, at least from the side visible from US-95.

so i read various reports, and i saw a strong suggestion that it's class 3 unless you choose the wrong path. i used eric kassan and kathy wing's reports tracks occasionally, but the ducks were really all i needed. you pretty much follow the ducks, and if you find yourself climbing something too tough then you probably missed a duck. there is one place, near the top, where a duck suggests climbing something which is probably low class 4... you want to go to the right, there are more ducks, and short traverse before you climb again. i considered moving this duck but there really didn't seem to be a better place for it...

the drive in is very rocky, and you will want hi-clearance, but i don't know that 4wd is absolutely necessary. based on my flat tire at signal peak i was moving slowly, and i took the extra precaution of dropping tire pressure (live, learn). there are three gates that you'll need to open/close, but they don't seem to be locked. on my outbound drive i ended up just behind a caravan of 5 jeeps... and when i returned to the trailhead after the hike i'd see 3 pickup trucks drive by. i guess there's something popular further along that road.
