Ascent Trip Report

Tried to revisit the nearby county HP at Archibald Station that I had the pleasure to visit as a guest at a workshop years ago with several biologists but today all was locked up tight and I am not about to stealth that. Peakbagging is FL is a mess. There are few hills with any prominence so when we are not able to get out to real states with real peaks we resort to highpointing but county HPing in FL is awful too. Not only no views, and rarely any prominence, but most on private property and worst of all - many have many candidate spots. So I have resorted to going to state parks where there is often a view, nice land (with a spring, beach, river, lake, or nice wooded area) and best of all no private land issues. Today I was excited to try out this state park hoping it had some nice woods to see. It has some vertical relief coming up from the lake to the scrub. And best of all, it is a lake I had great memories when my family was picked to be filmed on a boat for a national marketing campaign. But the hike was not all that great. A $2 fee to park. The trails were aweful. Poorly maintained and not in nice habitat. The park had been burned in many places and there was a lot of clearing activity. The 4 wheel drive trails where wide but in sugar sand to not fun to walk. No views of the lake other than at the lake. The HP on the border of the property line. So I got in some steps and walked in the woods for about 3 miles tagged it and left. Many FL state parks provide enough interest that the lack of vertical and views is OK for the nice hike but here...I do not expect to come back to this one (perhaps in a few years when the burned scrub becomes natural looking again)but not any time soon.
