Ascent Trip ReportSaturday. I arranged for someone to drop me off in the village of Baulmes southwest of Yverdon-les-Bains. Chuck Carlisle was going to Yverdon anyway. I arranged for him to pick me up at 6:00 pm.
My announced goal was Mt. Baulmes and I intended this as training and conditioning for a climb of Vanil Noir a week or two later, but as I climbed I considered going after the higher Aiguilles des Baulmes. I couldn't find my desired turnoff that could take me to either the Mont or the Aiguilles, but I was on good schedule, so I continued up the road to the col west of the Aiguilles, then headed up a trail towards the Aiguilles. I made it to the top, 1559m, about 900m gain and cloudy. After some photographs I hiked east toward the Mont. The trail vs. map-reading was a bit uncertain, particularly after I dropped down off Mt. Baulmes, but I made it back to the village of Baulmes in good order; 5 minutes late by my reckoning, 10 minutes early by Chuck's. Afterwards I noticed that I had come to < 1 km of the French/Swiss border during my hike. Even if I had noticed it on Saturday I hadn't had the time to go over, cross over and say afterwards that "I had been in France."
