Ascent Trip ReportPrior to the trip we mapped out three very reasonable wash routes up to the peak from the east side. We went out with the intent to try the south-most route of the three, but when we arrived, we saw that the start of the wash seemed to be near private property, so we opted to try the middle route since it was really all the same to us. All three washes looked reasonable from the topo.
The middle wash was easy and beautiful until we got to a 25-30 ft, class 5 dryfall as the wash narrowed into a slot. The dryfall was probably like a 5.3 or easier, but I wasn't feeling it since I'm not a fan of going up something I don't want to come down. In addition, the rock quality was terrible, so we decided to explore other options first before having to decide.
We backtracked slightly and tried to get out of the slot canyon by trying a drainage on the left of the canyon, but quickly realized that the rock was super unstable and steep. We then tried a drainage on the right, and found much better rock and were able to take the drainage out of the slot.
Once on top, we side-hilled our way forward through cactus brush until we were able to find another drainage that led us back into the slot a ways past the dryfall. We followed the wash until it was reasonable to start climbing the hill towards the peak.
The peak area required a bit of big boulder scrambling, but nothing that should concern most who have done other peaks on the SD100 list.
We descended off the West side and took the standard route back to our car via a wide canyon. Fantastic trip. This area of Anza is amazing despite our leaving it with cholla spikes in our legs and hands every damn time.
