Ascent of Green Knob on 2009-08-02
|Date:||Sunday, August 2, 2009|
|Ascent Type:||Successful Summit Attained|
| Location:||USA-North Carolina|
| Elevation:||5080 ft / 1548 m|
Ascent Trip ReportSpectacular views from abandoned fire tower at summit.
From the Green Knob overlook at Parkway milepost 350, walk northeast about 100 yards and find the trail on the left (northwest) side of the road. Trail is narrow and slippery in places but not difficult. Tower is in reasonable condition and is open--30 steps. On the descent, you'll find a fork just below the summit. Stay right to return to the Parkway. The left fork is a 3-mile trail down to the Black Mountain campground on the South Toe River.
NOTE: Don't confuse this mountain with another named Green Knob on the Parkway, in the Moses Cone Park near Blowing Rock. That one is a longer, flatter, hike that follows one of Mr. Cone's old carriage trails.
