Ascent Trip Report

los angeles is fortunate to have such a respectable mountain as its high point. a few weeks back i was able to bag tucson high point practically without stopping the car... but mount lukens at least seems to require a nice hike.

i went up rim of the canyon trail, which appears to be what remains of an old road. it's pretty much single track now, and it's solid as far as hiking trails go. it's gently graded, around 11%, with many long switchbacks. the ascent was fairly uneventful.

the summit is covered with antennas. i didn't find the benchmark.

i had views east/north/west, but to the south, the city was covered in smog. i could see santiago poking up above the smog.

i headed down the road going east, cutting switch backs, and joined the pickens spur trail. i tried to find a connector to the crescenta view trail, but it seems to have grown in... so i continued on pickens until i could connect with crescenta view. crescenta view was more rocky, and in worse repair than rim of the canyon trail. it's also switched back, but there were many use trails cutting the switchbacks. it's unclear to me if i saved time cutting the switchbacks because the terrain was slippery and steep enough i'd slow down to half-speed when cutting... ah well. it is definitely less distance, and more steep on this trail.
