Ascent Trip Report

North and south summits ascended in long day with some additional ascent on W4 Track from Jebel Shams Heights Resort ( not to be confused with Jebel Shams Resort). You can park outside Jebel Shams Heights resort and there are also wild camping opportunities if you have water, to avoid expense. The road up to the Resorts is only part tarmac and we were glad of 4 WD, but possibly ok for 2WD with care. The path is hard to find so it is a good idea to make sure you find the painted rocks near the resort and follow them. We did not, thinking we would notice crossing the path and struggled!

The path initially follows the wire fence of Jebel Shams Heights Resort alongs its long edge, parallel to the rim along a 4wd track and across a dry river bed and only then across to the rim. Look out for the red, white and yellow paint marks on rocks. The path on the ground is hard to follow across limestone and scrub, with several gulleys to descend and ascend but the paint is frequent and even possible to follow in the dark with care. The paint marks take you to the south, tourist summit with topograph, on rim with fantastic views and steep drops. The north summit is higher and you leave the red and yellow paint just before it descends into the gulley ( or alternatively- continue to the rim and follow that ). At the time of our visit construction work was ongoing and this north summit, at the rim edge, was accessible. However, it is within a fenced comms enclosure and may be inaccessible in future.
