Ascent Trip Report

I looked for a bus that would take me to Esperanza -> Atzitzintla -> Texmalaquilla. The people at the bus terminal recommended that I go to Cd. Mendoza and find a bus from there. I flipped a coin and took an AU bus to Cd. Serdan and caught buses to Esperanza and Atzitzintla, real slick. I walked a mile toward Texmalaquilla and then hitched a ride the rest of the way, got supper and camped about a 45 minute hike above Texmalaquilla. The road between El Seco and Ciudad Serdan skirts a crater with a beautiful lake at the bottom of it.
Dec 5 1992 Sat. I went and climbed Sierra Negra, 14435' to 15092' (I don't know how high it is). Great views of Pico de Orizaba (18700') along the way. On the way up I saw three people coming down. One was a Mexican. On top I notice that my binoculars were missing. I found them under the tree where I had last used them, on my way down. It took five hours up, three hours down. Back in camp, on the edge of a pasture, I noticed that my running shoes were missing, the only thing, so far, that I 'lost'. I
should have hidden my gear in the gully. I am sure someone stole them. I hiked down past Texmalaquilla, hitched a ride into Esperanza and caught a bus from there to Cd. Serdan. Esperanza does not have a hotel. I stayed at Hotel Monte Carlo, cold water only.
