Ascent Trip ReportMy 2nd State highpoint of the year turned out to be another drive-up without any elevation gain on foot. We were on our way out to visit relatives in Wyoming & South Dakota so we stopped to summit the highest point in Iowa on the way. Hawkeye Point is not that far away from I-90 so we took a little detour down into Iowa from Southern Minnesota to knock off another HP. After taking a few wrong turns on some dusty back roads we finally found our objective at the Sterler home. As of 2009 though there is now a state owned park at the summit. When I visited in 2004 the high point was at the end of a then un-used feeding trough. According to pictures and the highpointer web site it looks like that has been taken out. The view from the summit unfurls some classic Iowa views of gently rolling fields of corn. The wind that day almost blew us off our feet but we left Hawkeye point victorious knocking off my 6th State Highpoint with an attempt at Harney Peak, SD coming in a few days. |
