Ascent Trip Report

Had an excellent day traversing the Moats with Duncan and our dad. The trail is nice, fairly long and extremely scenic. There were long stretches of ledgy, open granite slabs offering views of Chocorua, Passaconaway, south to Shaw, east to Conway and into Maine, and numerous peaks to the north, though most were obscured by snow clouds. We encountered some significant sections of ice on the trail, but nothing that microspikes couldn't handle. Lower elevations were snow and ice free. Our mom dropped us off at the southern trailhead, shopped in Conway, and picked us up at Diana's Baths in the afternoon so we didn't need to set up a shuttle which made the whole day a lot easier. Overall, this was just a spectacular hike. As kids we had dismissed it because these weren't 4000 footers, but it would be a mistake to skip this hike as it is long, rugged and extremely beautiful.
