Ascent Trip ReportParked without incident at the end of Pinewood Drive next to the famous red truck. Left an apologetic note on the dashboard as others have suggested. Saw two young bucks while we were booting up. Walked around the gate, which has now been repaired, and headed up the heavily eroded road bed. Miraculously, the hamlet of Whispering Pines apparently didn't suffer any fire damage, but as we gained elevation, the devastation on the mountain grew worse and worse. The roots of many tree stumps burned deep into the ground leaving lots of holes and underground tunnels -- traps for the unwary. Luckily, I postholed only once in the soft ground.
Climbed the east peaks's 15-foot summit boulder using the crack on the east side. Coming back down was a bit of a challenge. The cell phone towers on this peak and on Cobb itself have been replaced but there's still plenty of evidence of fire damage.
Found the Cobb Mountain benchmark on a boulder guarded by some scorched tree branches. Left a summit register next to the benchmark and a second register at what appeared to be the highpoint of the southwest peak -- a 30" diameter rock. Did some more bouldering on the return, making for a nice, relaxing day.
