Ascent Trip Report3/26/03 -- Wednesday fly to Tumlingtar
4/11/03 -- Friday arrive Khare (15,912 ft on GPS)
4/12/03 -- Saturday hike to Mera La (pass) in 3 hr, elevation gain 2010 ft by altimeter watch, (GPS elevation: 17,775)
4/13/03 -- Sunday hike to high camp (GPS elevation: 19,025) gain: 1670 ft by altimeter watch pitch tents and descend to Mera La
4/14/03 -- Monday hiked to high camp in 1:54 hrs. elevation gain: 1460 by alt watch (730 ft/hr) I was in tent with my rope team of Polish doctor - Piotr, and Dutch girl - Mireille
4/15/03 -- Tuesday 1AM rose to prepare for 2AM start 2AM - no one else up. Went to Simon and Sally's tent to ask why and told climb was off due to new snow covering trail 4AM - was woken up and told we would climb Simon & Sally did not climb. There was one other rope team of 2 or 3 gung-ho fast climbers that left us way behind. 5:30-6AM - got going Piotr & Mireille were slow, ran out of energy 11AM - summited Mera ~21000 ft (actually there was a snow pinacle just above us and beyond a large crevase that would have required technical equipment to cross/climb) GPS elevation: 21,162 ft, elevation gain: 1960 by alt watch, ave 390 ft/hr, 5 hr to summit Descended to high camp and were met by porter with pot of orange Tang. But were surprised that camp was gone! Descended to Mera La and found nothing there either. Had to hike all the way to Tryfan rock with no food or water to meet main group.
4/16/03 -- Wednesday hiked to research base camp (GPS elevation: 16,275 - 16,568 ft) . 4/21/03 -- hiked to base of Ampu Laptcha pass and camped
4/22/03 -- over pass (2-3 hr on top waiting for porters etc to move fixed ropes) . 4/25/03 -- hike to top of Kala Patthar to watch sunrise on Mt. Everest 1:21 to top ave 1070 ft/hr, ~1500-1600 ft elevation gain . 4/29/03 -- flight from Lukla to Kathmandu
