Ascent Trip Report

The morning broke cool and frosty but extremely sunny. It beamed down on the group but I remained warm with my Uggs boots and donuts from Safeway. I enjoyed a blueberry cake while my friend went with a cinnamon twist. We got a late start to the day due to late night bullshitting with Hamms, Hot Pockets and Adobe Heat trail mix. Mouths were parched in the morning and dehydration was an ever present threat. In a panic on the way out of Deer Lodge we rushed to the Valley Food store for 3 sandwiches that were comprised mostly of Miracle Whip.....I give the sandwiches 5 stars (out of 5). Henceforth, we quickly raced to the trail head on Dempsey Creek Road so that we could find a quick bush with which to rid ourselves of the Adobe heat. Remember, one must bring toilet paper for excursions into the wilds.

After that, we hit the trail post haste with the hiker in the lead expelling extreme amounts of gas out of both ends whilst complaining about the density of the blueberry cake donuts feasted upon earlier in the Morn. We were fortunate not to get shot, though animals steered clear. We assumed due to the fragrance of the previous evenings Taco Bell, Town Pump burritos, hot pockets, crappy beer and 1.5 pounds of Adobe Heat. As we did not bring a map, or GIS, or compass and had no prior knowledge of the trail or how to summit we hiked all the way to the upper Elliot Lake where we could finally see Mount Powell shimmering in the distance towering 2,000 feet overhead. At this point we decided to feast upon the Miracle Whip sandwiches enjoying a fine meal before the epic bushwacking climb. Again, we must reiterate there were no animals in the vicinity and the only reason could be the Adobe Heat screaming out of our bodies. Pursuant to our original goals we hike strait up the ridge behind the ridge east of upper Elliot Lake through patches of snow, white pine and gaseous clouds of Adobe Heat.

Therefore, we followed that ridge to the Mt. Powell and summited around 3pm. At that point we wished that we had some Adobe Heat to celebrate the monumental task. The peak was unexpectedly calm, with nare a cloud in the sky. We counted 13 mountain ranges and buckets of lakes. Henceforth, we returned the same rout we ascented arriving back at the trailhead at 6:02 pm ecstatic about the momentous accomplishment bellies aching for the taste of another round of Adobe Heat and Miracle Whip sandwiches.
