Ascent Trip ReportEnterprise had hooked me up with a brand spanking new 2017 Ford Escape with 7+ inches of ground clearance that I was able to take part-way up the road (32.63954, -116.10141, as seen from above). Any farther than that would require 4WD because the road gets very gnarly before the next turn-out.
A bit of rain had been forecasted for the afternoon. It never came. (Duh, this is the desert?) Instead, I was treated to clear skies and surprisingly hot temps, reaching the high 80s. Not long after I left the SUV did a gang of jeeps come barreling past me, gifting me with clouds of dust. Yay. The last guy in their caravan stopped and chatted with me for a bit. They were all part of a San Diego 4WD club that does a trip each weekend. I didn't really care; I just wanted them to be gone so I could stop inhaling dust.
Most of the route up to Blue Angels follows a confusing collection of 4WD roads. The remainder of the route consists of unmaintained trails that could be very easily missed if you're not looking for them. I somehow managed to stay on them the whole time, so my track here should be a helpful reference.
