Ascent Trip ReportSisi Butte is a worthwhile hike in the extreme southeast corner of Clackamas County. From Portland the most direct travel route may be through Estacada and Road NF-46. However, my directions are from US Highway 26.
Take Highway US26 to between mile markers 66 and 67. Turn west on Skyline Road (NF-42). NF-42 is paved which makes for fast travel. After about 17 miles the road narrows to one-lane, but is well-surfaced and free of tight corners. At 21.7 miles from US26, turn left (south) on the well-signed 4220. After passing the junction with 4230 the road condition deteriorates but continues as pavement to the trailhead, about 4.5 miles from NF-42. The trail begins at a gate on the west side of 4220. The gate is set back far enough as to not be easily noticed. If 4220 turns to dirt, you went three-tenths of a mile too far.
The Sisi lookout is accessed by a rough road that travels about three miles through forest with an occasional view toward Olallie Butte and Mount Jefferson. I intended to ride a bike but found myself walking the bike much of the way due to the steepness of the road and its rough surface. While the bike was not an asset on the ascent, it made the descent much faster.
About ten minutes before the lookout an unmaintained road (#129) branches right to the saddle between the two summits. I hiked to the lookout summit and enjoyed excellent views from the tower, descended to the unmaintained road, hiked the road to the saddle, then followed a faint trail on the north side of the ridge to the northeastern summit. Views from this summit are limited by trees. On the rocky knoll leading to the summit, look for one of Oregon’s most impressive cairns.
