Ascent Trip Report

Starting from our camp at Heyburn State Park we drove to St. Maries and then up the St. Joe River for about ten miles. We missed the road up Phillips Draw, and instead took the road up Reed's Gulch. A steep narrow road through active logging areas to the top of the Rochat Divide. The clouds were so thick at times visibility was only 50 feet. We eventually connected up with Forest Road 205 and then down into Latour Creek where we found the Twin Crags/Boise Creek road. Using dead reckoning toward the general contours toward Latour peak, we eventually topped out at the saddle between Latour and Latour South. We tried a four wheel drive track toward the summit, but fresh snow made the going precarious. Got out the GPS, and it showed about a half mile to the summit. We followed a primitive jeep road from there to what appeared by all senses available to be the Peak. GPS confirmed within a few feet, and no other highpoints within 400 yards were visible. Due to fresh bear tracks in the snow, we didn't hang around long before returning to the truck. Later on the way back down, the clouds broke and I believe we were for sure on top.
