Ascent Trip ReportBased on other TRs, we were expecting terrible pavement (potholes, etc) to the top of this one. We were in for a treat: this road has been recently re-paved from the highway to within a quarter mile of the top. The last little bit is cracked with a few potholes, probably indicative of how the entire road was for previous ascents. We were able to go up to 50 mph on the new pavement, and had plenty of time to wander around the top before enjoying a perfect Oregon sunset from just below the top with views of Shasta and McLoughlin. Directions to the top are easy: From OR-66 just west of Keno, turn on to Hamaker Mtn Rd (BLM signage at the bottom warning of infrequent maintenance) and follow it 9.25 miles or so to the top, staying on the main pavement the entire way. There are plenty of dirt road spurs leading off the main road along the way. The nice, new pavement turns to old pavement 0.25 miles from the top. Continue up the mediocre pavement to the top. We explored the ground on the north side of the fence, which appears to be the highest accessible ground. Inside the fence is just a few inches taller and clearly has been artificially altered. There was no way into the fence and I did not have my bolt cutters handy... |
