Ascent Trip Report

***Sierra Club Outing***
led by Mat Kelliher, Mike Dillenback

First hike of the day on the first day of the 2016 HPS Fall Festival. The plan was to follow HPS Route 1, but we ended up starting out from a location (called Cactus Flat) about a mile or so SE of where HPS Route 1 starts. No worries, we just headed NW XC up and over a saddle and then down into the actual area ID'd on the topo as Cactus Flat. Once down here we made our way over to the actual route, intercepting it about a half mile or so NE of where it actually began. Straight forward from here, we made our over to the old mine at the base of the actual peak, and left three of our group who were having a bit of trouble with the heat. Our remaining 18 headed up the steep and kind of loose gully on the southern flank of the peak up to the summit. Coming out, we headed straight for the highway and then walked alongside it to where we'd parked.
