Ascent of Puigmal on 2016-10-01
|Date:||Saturday, October 1, 2016|
|Ascent Type:||Successful Summit Attained|
| Elevation:||9547 ft / 2909 m|
Ascent Trip ReportFrom E, trail all the way, a little steep and loose but no difficulties. 3h20 up, 1h50 down going steady.
From our Font-romeu base, thru Saillahouse, followed signs for Puigmal ski area. Drove past a barrier to car park xxxx just before locked barrier. Several cars there.
Route follows road beyond barrier then continues in same direction, following stream. Most direct route in a few minutes takes wide track R and shortly turns L uphill at a pair of cairns xxxx. However we follow main trail along stream (nice view of 3 dippers) which continues, marked with yellow or white paint and cairns, eventually to a col. Just before col I climb up L on steep straightforward ground to Puigmal de Llo 2801p46 xxxx then jog down to col to rejoin Lee and Adrian. Short climb E to Petit Puigmal de Segre 2810p42 xxxx then followed good path along ridge to Puigmal d'Err, a few dozen other hikers around; at summit people are converging from several different routes.
Unusual trig pillar, steel cylinder filled with concrete; marker is a bolt, with another bolt on base as a backup.
Down W ridge, taking obvious fork R further down to rejoin our upward route as the cairn mentioned above.
Then short drive to Tossa d'Alp for an afternoon ascent.
