Ascent Trip Report

***A few days after this ascent, I am significantly questioning the validity of my previous 2 ascents as I have just gone to the memorial pillar. After further investigation, it appears from looking at the topo and satellite view that the summit is actually in a field about .1 miles or so behind the pillar. I am leaving the ascents as successful for now for the sole reason that I do not recall seeing higher ground either time. However, I will go back soon after this ascent and verify if the true summit is the one in peakbagger, or the pillar.***

***Update*** After hiking back up, I have concluded the memorial pillar is NOT the true summit. Click the link below to see a summary of my findings.

Did this as a night hike with some friends. Be forewarned, coyotes starting comping up the hill from all directions and started howling at us. So yeah, there's coyotes around at night.

My previous TR has directions from starting from the Whitman Mission Visitor Center. If you are climbing this peak and have no interest in the Oregon Trail and old pioneering history etc., than you can take the back way we took which seems to be a more direct route. Its longer in walking distance but shorter overall due to not having to drive around the peak.

We took Rose St. To W. Whitman Dr. I was with a group of friends and didn't take odometer readings. Its fairly straight forward though. Take W. Whitman Dr. for about 4-5 miles and you will come to a 4 way intersection with Last Chance Rd. Continue straight and immediately park in the gravel spots. The road will also be marked Whitman Mission Rd.

We walked from here. It appears from the crosswalk paint all the way up the rd. to the gate, I presume they don't want you to drive. The road ends at a locked gate between .1 - .2 up the road so your not gaining much any way. After about .6 miles (just an estimate - didn't take a GPS), the loop trail around the Whitman Memorial Pillar is in on your right. Follow it for about .1 - .2 miles to the top.

Looking at the satellite view, the summit marker on peakbagger is off by about .1 miles. The summit is the pillar. Unfortunately it's gated off right around the true summit, so depending on how comfortable you are, technically you will have to hop the fence to get the true summit (you can hop the fence, tag the summit and hop back over in about 6-7 seconds).
