Ascent Trip Report

Having done Mt. Ritter the day before, I was having some issues with some hotspots on the backs of my ankles and was relegated to easy hikes on the long drive home. I hiked a few miles out of Olmstead Point an hour earlier, and it was about all I could take. The plan for Crane Flat was to drive up, the beta I got from Andrew Kirmse was that a paved road lead to within a quarter mile of the summit. I could handle that. But just like the last time I tried to do this peak, I picked a bad day and it was gated at the start. No problem, I had on my really thick hiking socks so I decided to just hike the road in my socks, which gave my feet no problems at all. I carried my boots with me in case the quarter mile off road was problematic but it turned out that I didn't need them. On the way up a NPS employee told me that I only had an hour before they started downing some of the dead trees, I said I would hurry. I thought they might question why I was walking in my socks but they didn't. I walked up to the summit, and met a couple of employees at the lookout. I signed the log book, snapped a few pictures, and then walked back down, finishing in a bit under an hour for the 3 miles.
