Ascent Trip Report

I had my eye on Mauna Kea since before we planned our honeymoon. So, just 5 days after we were married, I told thegreatexplorer that we were going from sea level to the highpoint of Hawaii. She was fine with that (she suffers through many of my highpoint excursions), right up until we got to the visitor center and saw all the warning signs about altitude. I explained that we would only be up there for a few moments, then come down, but she got pretty agitated and asked a ranger...who of course, doomed and gloomed about the dangers. Fine, says I...I will drive back to our condo (Punalu'u, great place) and come back tomorrow. That did it, she didn't want to waste any more time. She white knuckled all the way to the top, never got out of the car, even though I was driving and it wasn't that bad at all. I jogged to the actual high point..which was a mistake coming from sea level. Took a few photos of the view, then headed back down, coughing the whole way. Too much effort at altitude...and I know better! Anyway, it was a great morning, and hanging out with the turtles on our black sand beach the rest of the day made it better.
