Ascent Trip Reportgmaps seems to think this trailhead is somewhere else, but once you're on 3852 it's obvious which way to go. i just picked the intersection of 3852 and clover creek road as the gmaps destination to get me to the right general area.
i didn't read up on the hike ahead of time, and so at around 2.3mi when i saw some cairns on the right hand side of the trail i didn't take them. i should have :) ten minutes later, after looking at my map it seemed silly to just keep going on the official trail the extra distance, especially when the cross-country to the ridge was a mere 14% grade... so i struck out through the forest uphill. nice crunchy deadfall and soft pine needles.
a short while after going uphill i ran across a trail, i followed it a bit, but it really seemed to be going further away from the summit... (and it had what looked like a mountain bike track, in the wilderness, hmm)... i went back to climbing straight up hill, it really was easy cross-country.
i'd eventually re-connect with the trail once i was on the ridge, and finally got my first view of the summit somewhere around 4.3mi into the hike. again, since i hadn't done much reading up ahead of time, i was a bit worried the summit was going to be tree covered, with no views, because on the drive in all i saw was trees... but apparently i couldn't see the true summit from the road i drove in on.
the summit is nice and rocky, it does have trees, but if you move around a bit you can see in most directions. i could see shasta to the south, and mcloughlin to the NW, plus various other peaks (future climbs!), and lakes. the benchmark is intact, in great shape. i didn't see any register.
i was feeling sluggish today so i didn't bag mount carmine... it looked like an easy 2mi 700' addition but that will have to wait for another day.
on descent i was trying to find the top end of the cairned trail, with no luck... so i went back down cross-country. i would eventually find the climber trail about 0.2mi before i hooked back up with the main trail at the cairns i skipped earlier in the day. if you're looking for the climber trail then my descent track marks the place where you should leave the main trail, maybe you'll be able to follow it to the top (or maybe this climber trail is the one i ran across earlier, seemingly going in the wrong direction).
