Ascent Trip Report

Parked at the Ranger Station at the end of Cole Mill Road. Hiked down to the Eno River and followed the Buckquarter Trail to the bridge over Buckwater Creek and the start of Holden Mill Trail. I bore left on the far side of the bridge taking the clockwise way around the Holden Mill Trail loop. The initial larger loop begins to loop back at a small stream coming down from the north into the Eno River. I continued on to the next smaller loop which goes by the remains of the mill. While on the upper portion of that second loop I was on the look out for a track headed north towards Oak Knob.

I followed a user trail for a short distance before merging onto a defineable track that I was travel on more or less all the way to the summit area. There are a lot of blow downs that impede progress on this little used track. Throughout this north/south way there are occasional trees bearing blue tape. Not as frequent or dependable as the yellow blazes on the Holden Mill Trail, but the blue tape does show up often enough to reassure that the hike remained on course. About halfway up the track I did visit an abandoned tobacco barn and a nearby chimney. A little further up I explored an abandoned two story rough hewn cabin.

Travel up to the buildings from the river was along a gentle grade. After leaving the two story cabin, the grade increased and the sense of climbing towards a high point became obvious.

A home also occupies the summit area. I skirted around it to the east reaching the high spot over towards a small fenced in clearing.

Round trip for this hike was about 5 miles. You could likely shorten the hike considerably by using route 70, St Marys Rd, Dumont Dr, and Oak Knob Ct to get a vehicle to within a 1/4 mile of the high point and then bushwhacking to the top.
