Ascent Trip Report

We were short on time so we had to go with the normal short trail instead of the 11 mile hike in from the north which I would have preferred. We parked at the big lodge and went inside to check it out. It's kind of like a more modern (and therefore less cool) version of the Timberline Lodge on Mt. Hood. There's a great view to the south from here and we had to take it in because once we started hiking we were in the trees the rest of the time. We headed east on the road and then crossed it going north on the trail to Signal Hill. The trail hooked around the east and then north side of the summit. On a rock on the side of the trail, we found a dead luna moth that was nice to see up close. The trail then goes south to the top which has the mailbox, big sign, map of Arkansas made out of rocks, and no view. I thought the highest ground was in some thorns a few feet east of the sign. We took some pictures and then headed down quickly. It was about sunset and we had to get down to a campsite. We were able to find one at Spring Lake Campground in the national forest just before it got dark. This was state highpoint number 12 for Artski and myself.
