Ascent Trip Report

Three of us booked hotels in Bishop. We left the hotel at 5am and drove up highway 168 to the White Mountain Road. We picked up the fourth in our party at Grandview Campground. We drove to the Bancroft gate which is 2 miles from the Univ. of Cal. Research Station at 12400 ft. Usually this gate is closed but it is opened two days out of the year on Labor Day Weekend. We arrived at the gate around 6:30am. This was the time it was supposed to be opened. It was already opened and we drove up to the research station. You really need a high clearance vehicle for this road. I have a Nissan Xterra and I didn't have to put it into 4 wheel drive but the large tires and high clearance really helped. We arrived at the research station around 7am and the parking area was almost completely filled. So, if you want to shorten this hike by doing it during the two days per year when the gate is open make sure to arrive at the gate by 6:30am or you will have to park outside the gate anyway. We started hiking around 7:20am. There is a jeep track from the research station all the way to the summit. This was the easiest 14er that I have ever done. It took us 3 hours and 40 minutes to summit but I was walking very slowly due to others in my party that were not fit. I would call it a very leisurely pace. The pace down was very leisurely as well. If you are fit you could actually run up to the peak or ride a mountain bike. Make sure to acclimatize. We saw a group almost carrying down a young asian lady who obviously was suffering from altitude sickness.
