Ascent Trip Reporta very enjoyable hike. i was surprised by how much i liked it: it was almost like every step was a pleasure to make.
google maps will lead you straight to the "trailhead". i came in off CA-89, and took pilgrim road (paved), then military pass road (graded dirt, in great shape, any car could make it). the fun starts when you turn right at 41.4495, -122.0802 to head up the mountain a bit. the main issue i had with this road were the sandy sections: my car's tires just aren't up to the task. after deciding i'd pushed my luck far enough i parked at ~6700'.
at the point where i parked there was clearly a logging trail/track/road: whatever it was, it was steep, and clearly made by something with tracks not tires (i.e. bulldozer). i would basically climb straight up this 30% grade until i reached the ridge, and then i'd follow the ridge to the summit.
the ridge is really an excellent hike. you'd think it might be too rocky: but i found it was very easy to alternate the rocky side and the forested side and pick the best of each.
great views of shasta, with clouds just starting to encroach on its summit. basically any time you wanted a view you just had to turn your head toward shasta.
