Ascent Trip ReportWe arrived after dark to the Happy Jack Mine where we were told we could camp if we walked in to the old campground. It's not much of a campground, more of a picnic space, but we found a fine place to sleep. When we woke up in the morning we took the steep dirt and wood stepped path up the eastern route. There was a lookout point that gave a great view of the foggy river at sunrise. The top was just beyond that with pretty much the same view, a bench, and a cross that will light up. For the way down we took the route heading southwest which ended in a few dozen steps lined with benches that took us down to the heavily decorated valley which houses the mine entrance and gift shop. This felt more like a "peak hike" than any other hike I've done in eastern Nebraska. After a tour of the mine we went to North Loup for their Popcorn Days and then to the state fair in Grand Island. |
