Ascent of Una Mountain on 2016-08-28
|Date:||Sunday, August 28, 2016|
|Ascent Type:||Successful Summit Attained|
| Elevation:||8580 ft / 2615 m|
Ascent Trip ReportI climbed Una Mountain from a camp where the Cardinal Peak trail meets the Gordon Creek trail, about 17 miles from the Holland Lake trailhead. A short distance (~1/2 mile) east of camp I headed up the south ridge which is very open after the first couple hundred meters. I then followed the ridge to its end at the limestone cliff. At the cliff I turned northwest until I found a 3rd class break which I used to gain the upper part of Nannie Basin. From there it is an easy walk to the summit.
On the return I found a game trail at the very base of the cliffs which made for easy walking but difficult acquisition of GPS signals. Thus, the ascent part of the track shows the 3rd class break's location a bit better - it's obvious as you walk along the cliff looking for a way up. GPS says 8.5 miles roundtrip and 4,500' total vertical gain from camp.
