Ascent Trip Report

Beautiful day for a hike at the Sunrise area of Mount Rainier National Park!

We arrived at about 10:30am to find the parking lot busy but far from full. Started hiking at about 11am. The first section of the trail was very busy, but the crowds thinned out considerably after the first couple of junctions. We passed a WTA work party who were busy improving a rocky section of the trail: THANK YOU, WTA VOLUNTEERS!!

The trail was in excellent shape, and we were treated to incredible views throughout the hike. We saw a few pikas on the way up, and at the lookout we met some of the most brazen chipmunks I've ever seen. One of the little buggers had to be shooed away from each of our packs repeatedly. They're obviously quite used to handouts here; we actually saw a mom telling her young children that it was OK to feed part of their lunch to the critters (despite a multi-lingual sign clearly stating that it is NOT okay to feed wildlife posted just a few feet away from them). All in all a pretty great day at MRNP :-)
