Ascent Trip ReportArguably a racially-sensitive name for this mountain, it had nonetheless been on my "to do" list for awhile. The only day available for me to do it was on a hot August day when the temp was 28 C with the humidity making it feel like 33 C.
From my research beforehand, it would appear that there are several trails, but most hikers and snowshoers seem to take the route with the trail head located at the south end of the Prickett Rd. (which is a crescent), near the intersection of Hwy 17. The trail is essentially a road best left to ATVs or 4x4 vehicles to negotiate, unless you're hiking it. There are no signs indicating that this is a trail that will get you to the summit. The road is shaded by the surrounding trees, for about half of the trail anyway, offering some relief on this hot day.
The trail winds up and down for the first 1.3 km, before you arrive at a T-intersection. Turn left and continue another 1.65 km up a medium-grade rise in the elevation, before encountering the first of two other branching roads coming from the east end of the mountain. Remain on the main road to the left. From this point until you reach the summit, the road has noticeably more loose rock, and it gets noticeably steeper. It continues this way for the next 850 m, before finally reaching the summit.
It took me 1hr 15min to ascend, which included a few rest stops along the way, and 50 min to descend. The only other person I saw on the mountain this day was an ATV-er who passed me going down as I was still ascending.
This trail also seems to be popular for snowshoeing during the winter. |
