Ascent Trip ReportHiked Abercrombie the day after Garry Harrington and I climbed Liberty Cap and Columbia Crest on Rainier.
I drove my 2wd rental car all the way up to the 5,100' trailhead on FS-350. The 7.1 miles from the paved road at 2,600' took an hour going up and 1:10 hours coming down. One fellow in a pickup truck at the start of the road warned me about my 2wd car not being able to get very far, but it was ok as long as I went slow, similar to what Lou Hibbard found on his ascent.
I have an uncanny history of my hiking times matching those from Rob Woodall's trip reports. This was no different. 1:15 hrs up and 1:15 hrs down for the 8 miles and 2,200' round trip (per trailhead sign).
The road might be more difficult with recent rain. I had dry conditions. And fortunately I didn't meet any oncoming traffic. That would have been interesting.
