Ascent Trip ReportA woods road walk with a short wack - 3.2 miles, 2 hour RT including all stops.
From the city of Iron Mountain (at the WI border) I went east on Hwy #2 for approx. 17 miles to the JCT Hwy#2/Forest City Road in Waucedah. I zeroed my odo.
0.0M .. left Hwy #2 northbound on Forest City Road and made an immediate right (east) on Beaver Petes Road (paved), changes name at the Dickinson/Menominee County Line to #45 Road.
2.5M .. Road Jct, continued straight (east) on #45 Road (gravel)
3.1M .. T-JCT with roads in both directions gated, I parked, this was my TH (45.76663,-87.67667). The HP is to the northeast
I walked left (north) to a fork at 50 yards (both branches gated). Bill Schuler's route takes you left (straight), my planned route went right (northeast) and is numbered "W6890 Meyer Twp". At .4 miles came to a T-JCT with a better road, I went left (still northeast) and in .25 miles came to a big tree with a shed (45.77164,87.66796) - a cottage is 50 yards north overlooking the Leaper Lake (beautiful spot), no one around.
I stayed with the road as it continues northeast (parallel/away from the lake, you can't see it) for another .4 miles to a 2nd cottage with a few buildings, and like the first, a beautiful site overlooking Leaper Lake (45.77496,-87.66137) and no one home.
I checked out the area looking for trails going my way, finding an old track on the east side of the cottage (a bit obscure from the cottage but once inside its obvious). I followed this track northeast 250 yards to a small clearing, then another few hundred yards to a crest (45.77740,-87.65762). This was the start of my bushwack, the HP is due north at .3 miles - an outstanding tall deciduous open forest with a grass floor and little undergrowth, easy going.
There is nothing obvious at the summit (45.78061,-87.65832), no views. 50 yards west of the HP is track of sorts that comes up from the northwest.
This is a good route however on private land, hopefully the owners are hiker friendly.
