Ascent Trip Report

Needing a quick acclimation hike before attempting the state HP, Granite, and staying in Red Lodge, I set my sights on a quick hike up to over 9,000 feet. By myself in bear country, I figured you can't beat following the blue slopes of a ski mountain to the summit. A number of hikers looked at the route and elected not to go. I talked to the maintenance crew and a nice young man and woman said sure no problem hike up and be careful. Apparently the largest black bear of the season was scrambling around then tick tacked my way up. The true summit is just up past the final lift. There are views from the rock pile at the top and along the Lazy M. It is over 2000 feet of vertical from the parking lot to the summit. I summited in 1.5 hours and was down in 45 minutes. I barked like a dog every now and then to warn away any bears. Trick must of worked. I saw no bears.
