Ascent Trip Report

After lunch I drove back out to Encampment and headed up the pass. I saw some CDT through hikers trying to get a ride to Encampment from the highway crossing. I parked on the south end of the highway with the hopes of hiking Bridger Peak via the CDT, but I only had two and a half hours, or maybe a little less, to get there and back. I started out on the trail and found a steep uphill right away. This was discouraging, but the trail turned downhill and was relatively flat after that. I was able to clear four logs off of the trail by hand while I was trying to hustle through the section. The trail soon met a road and used the road almost the rest of the way to the top. I got rained on briefly on the way up, but I was sweating too much to even think about putting my jacket on. Near the top I deviated from the road and realized that the trail had left it just a few hundred feet before I did. I rejoined it and aimed for the USFS radio repeater on top of the scree looking rocks. The loose rock only made up the last twenty feet of gain. On top was the foundation of an old lookout building. There were great views all around, and it was weird to look way across the North Platte Valley to Kennaday Peak where I had been this morning. I noticed that there was a peak almost as high maybe half a mile northwest on the ridge. I hurried down on my way back to try and get my total time under two hours. This meant running on the downhills and some of the flats. I felt like I was in great shape from all of my trail work this past month. I missed my goal slightly with a round trip of 2h 2m. Unfortunately I did not see any through hikers on the trail.
