Ascent Trip ReportI followed Edward Earl's excellent and detailed trip report. For the northern point, I thought a rock that leaned out over the abyss a short distance north of the overlook was the highest in the vicinity, so I sat down about 3 feet from the edge and leaned forward and put my hand on the highest point. For the summit with the towers, which is signed (and considered by most highpointers to be the true HP) I parked by the gated summit road, which was signed, "Steens Summit Trail". A half mile hike up this dirt road brought me to the summit. I found the register, which was inside a Ziploc bag inside a Ziploc bag inside a Ziploc bag. Unfortunately, there was no writing instrument inside the bags and I had neglected to bring one. So bring your own pen or pencil if you want to sign the register.
As Edward mentioned, this is almost a 180 mile round trip from Burns, which includes almost 60 miles on dirt roads. Burns is the closest town with amenities, so check your gas before heading south to Steens Mountain.
