Ascent Trip ReportBecca and I set out for a nice overnight trip to the Tatoosh Range, with the idea of traversing to Unicorn Pk, or at least heading up The Castle. We read up on the beta for the Castle and opted to bring the 30m rope and a very light alpine rack. After grabbing a permit at Longmire and checking out some of the tourist stuff, we headed for the trailhead. After making quick work of the trail to the crest, we dropped packs a little bit to the east and headed up Pinnacle Pk. Becca is keen on working the 100 Peaks at Mt Rainier NP, so this one had to be ticked! It was my second ascent of Pinnacle, so I knew exactly where to go, so we made a rapid ascent to the summit.
After Pinnacle Pk, we headed east towards the far side of The Castle to scout out a campsite. A prefect spot was found just east of The Castle with a panorama view of Mt Rainier from the tent! It is potentially the best campsite we have shared to date! The following morning we first ascended The Castle. The fourth class pitch is quite short and easy. The summit views of Rainier were outstanding from the Tatoosh Range! We rapped back down, leaving a new sling and cutting one of the oldest-looking ones off to take out.
Following The Castle, we headed for Unicorn Pk, but opted instead to go up Manatee Pk, another Mt Rainier 100. It was mostly use trail to the top from the SE ridge. We meandered our way back to the car from this point, collecting our camp along the way, and generally just enjoying each other's company in the great outdoors with excellent views of Mt Rainier along the way! One of the best overnight trips I have done in any mountain range! |
