Ascent Trip ReportFrom the east, take Exit 131 off I-90. Go south on SD 240 to a short distance past the visitor's center, then continue southwest on SD 377 as 240 goes off to the northwest. About two miles on 377 will take you to SD 44. Go west on 44 for about 32 miles to Scenic, where BIA (Bureau of Indian Affairs) 27 goes south. Take 27 south about 20 miles to the White River Visitor Center, where BIA 2 will go west. Take BIA 2 west for about 20 miles to BIA 41, and turn right (north) on the latter. Follow this road until it climbs onto the plateau. The HP will be on your right (southeast) at the south edge of the plateau. These roads are now all paved.
The HP is on the Stronghold Unit on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. When I first investigated this HP a number of years ago the NP Web site said that hiking was permitted anywhere in the backcountry. Now they say that there is private property in the area and that permission is needed to cross private property. They say that a list of property owners is maintained at the White River Visitor Center.
This was my third visit to this area. On the first, several years ago, I was unsure of where to park and how to get to the HP. My second visit, two years ago, found several dozen head of cattle all over the high ground, and I didn't feel up to confronting them. This time there were no cattle and I parked on the roadside grass just after ascending onto the high ground and hiked from there. I was quickly under the barbed wire fence and striding through the high grass. It was apparent that cattle had not grazed this area for some time. I went to the rim and then visited some areas that appeared to be just about as high before returning to my vehicle.
