Ascent Trip ReportMy original plan was to do this as a solo hike. However, it surprisingly turned into a group hike.
I didn’t do much research on this peak and I was surprised to find that it was so short. Once I realized this, I thought that maybe I would have time to do another peak somewhere else. Anyways, I started out solo at 0845 from the Timber Creek Trailhead (I'm not sure if that is the proper name) near the Timber Creek Campground. After 2 hours, I was nearing the top. I noticed some hikers had already summited and I was excited to talk to them. Once I hit the top, I realized they were my old hiking buddies from the Las Vegas Mountaineers Club (LVMC), led by Eric Kassan. Susan Murphy was also there and 6 others that I had not met before. It was a pleasant surprise and it was great to see everyone again. It had been 2 years since I had left Vegas. I now live in Tooele, Utah.
Eric invited me to hike the rest of the trip with them. The plan was to hike from North Schell to South Schell and hit everything in between. He indicated that he had left his SUV at the top, on the road, from Berry Creek Campground. They camped at Berry Creek the night before and they drove several vehicles to the Timer Creek Trailhead that morning. He said he would drive me back to my car that night. This was special because it was Kevin and Amber’s last hike on the LVMC list.
The day was hot, but breezy. We trudged along the ridgeline and even hit some small peaks in between. The elevation stayed above 11,000 feet the entire time. Many of the registers were taken and Kevin replaced them as best as he could. We ended up celebrating on top of South Schell for Kevin and Amber.
From Kevin’s GPS, it was something like a total of 12.1 miles for the day. It was a great hike that went from solo to a group hike. Because of this, it has to be one of the best hikes I have ever had.
