Ascent Trip Report

The Barcroft Laboratory opens the road gate twice during the summer from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., which shortens the hike to White Mountain by 4 miles round trip. Kathy and I were heading to White Mountain Peak 13615, not White Mountain, which is about 1.5 miles past White Mountain and is on the California 13,500'+ and Non-Sierra California 10,000'+ lists. From the last switch back on the way up to White Mountain, Kathy and I followed Daryn Dodge's excellent route description through the class 3 section of the route, but near the end we stayed too high, and ended up crossing over the ridge to avoid technical rock, making a couple of borderline class 4 moves in the process. On the return, we followed Daryn's route more closely, with Kathy doing the route finding, which was generally class 2 with some class 3 moves mixed in. Daryn's route is definitely the way to go!

The summit register was a sheet of paper in a glass jar, so Kathy and I left a new register book. Trip stats and GPS track include ascents of White Mountain Peak 13908 and Mount Barcroft. Also, I finished the California 13,500' + list on this peak!
