Ascent Trip ReportOnly had to deal with a few areas of brush-bashing and devil's club. That part was not nearly as bad as I had expected, perhaps because we stayed high above the creek. On the way in, we ascended a gully that came out well above the beautiful lower basin (which is at 4,600'). This is the large open basin just below and east of Double Peak. We could not find that gully in the thick forest as we were exiting. After wasting time and effort looking for it, we descended to the lower basin and followed the creek out of the basin. After several hundred yards, the creek bed narrows and steepens. So, we exited the creek bed on a great, well-traveled elk trail that traversed the slope above the creek and descended gradually, passing the various gullies and under the cliff bands and leading us to a straight-forward descent of the slope to Chinook Creek at 2,700'.
The dramatic summit block of the higher, SE summit, is a fun Class 2 rock scramble. |
